Effect of Alkalies on Wool
نویسنده
چکیده
Data on the effect of various alkaline reagents on the physical and chemical properties of wool yarn are presented. When wool is treated with dilute sodiumhydroxide solutions, a rapid splitting off of a portion of the sulphur occurs. On continued treatment, the sulphur content of the residual wool approaches a constant value of about 1.8 percent. The results indicate that the alkaline treatment has changed a portion of the sulphur to a form which tends to resist further splitting from the molecule. Oxidizing and reducing agents attack the disulphide groups and make wool more susceptible to alkaline treatments. The susceptibility of untreated wool to alkaline reagents appears to be closely associated with the lability of its sulphur in alkaline solutions. I. II. nI. Oxidation of Wool : Effect of Hydrogen Peroxide on Wool
The purpose of this investigation was to provide quantitative data showing the effect of oxidizing agents on wool as a basis for studying all processes in which wool is exposed to oxidation reactions. The work reported in this paper deals only with the effect of hydrogen peroxide. Data are presented showing the effects on wool of varying the concentration, temperature, and pH of the hydrogen pe...

Previous papers have reported the effects of salt concentration (2) and temperature (10) on the extent of combinat, ion of wool with hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide. As with other proteins, the tendency of wool to combine with acids and bases is also greatly influenced by the presence of formaldehyde (3). An investigation of this influence is reported in the present paper.’ Owing to t.he ...

In the present work an evaluation was carried out on the effect dye-bath pH and mordant type on the obtained shades and fastness properties in wool dyeing with cochineal. In this way wool samples were first mordanted with four different mordants and subsequently dyed with cochineal at different levels of dye-bath pH. Colorimetric evaluations were carried out and fastness properties of the dyed ...
متن کاملOxidation of Wool : Alkali ~ Solubility Test for Determining the Extent of Oxidation
Oxidizing agents attack the disulfide groups of the cystine in wool and increase the solubility of the wool in alkaline solutions. The determination of the alkalisolubility may be used as a measure of the extent to which the wool is oxidized. The method is applicaule as a control in practical processes, such as bleaching and chlorination, and offers a measure of the extent to which wool is degr...
